I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

Hello and welcome to a new and very exciting season at Beckenham Rugby Club. Although many of our age groups have already started doing a bit of pre-season training our club season officially starts this coming Sunday 30th August. I appreciate it is a bank holiday and some will be away, we decided with so much happening over the coming few weeks it would be a good idea to start registering players as soon as possible.

Training for U7s – U12s will start at 10am this coming Sunday with the juniors starting at 11.30am.

Please check with your age group coaches for any specific details.

The membership form for the forthcoming season is attached, it will save a lot of time if you could complete this in advance and bring it with you to registration. Registration will be happening over the next 4 weeks. You will note that membership fees have remained at the same level for the fourth year running, I trust you will agree that the club provides great value for money.

There have been some significant changes at the club over the summer with a lot of money and effort expended in doing up the clubhouse and make it a more welcoming and comfortable place for our members to enjoy. We hope you appreciate the hard work that has gone into it.

We also have a new caterer providing food and hot drinks at the club from the refurbished kitchen. All of this we hope will make the Sunday morning experience even better!

The first of the big events coming up this year is the 1st Beckenham Half Marathon on Sunday 6th September.

This is an event in aid of a cancer charity that is closely connected to the rugby club, Action Against Cancer, and will hopefully be a massive fund raiser. The day itself should be fantastic with the run starting at 10.15am from the club, being cheered off by the Beckenham players. On the runner’s return there is a day of enjoyment planned including DJs, bands, bouncy castles, a raffle and an auction all in aid of the charity. Raffle tickets will be on sale in the lead up to the event and if you can support the event in any way, maybe donating a prize for the raffle or giving an hour as
a steward for the event, please contact the website above.

On Saturday 12th September there is a festival of men’s rugby at the club, with an array of local teams competing for the first ever ‘Hog Roast Cup.’ The 1st XV will also be playing a preseason friendly on that day. Even if you do not particularly want to watch rugby there will be a bouncy castle, stalls from local merchants and a beer festival – something for all the family, in whichever order suits your family! Fun starts at about 11.30am.

The other major event approaching is of course the World Cup. You will see the club has invested in new large screen televisions and are planning events to enhance the experience of people watching the games. This will be a great chance to introduce people, young and old to the fantastic game of rugby. The club is planning for this and is looking forward to the positive impact it will have on the game and our club, however one thing we always need are more volunteers. You may not want to coach (although please do not think that if you have not played rugby you can’t coach, some of our best coaches have not played) but the age groups need people to help on the admin and organisation side such as well as arranging events and fund raising. One thing we often experience at the club is that people will happily get involved when asked directly, however do not want to step forward because they feel it might be interfering.
Please do not have concerns on this front, if every age group had 20 ‘interfering’ parents we would be in a great position! If you can help in any way please talk to your age group coaches or contact me directly.

Wishing you a great season,

George Lawlor
Youth Chairman
