Beckenham edge 11 try classic in the heat!

Match day two of the season saw a fresh Beckenham side take on Sutton & Epsom in the scorching sun and 33 degree heat
10 changes saw a new lineup with two well deserved debutants. Stefan Linton and new lock Josh Hiscott puts on the Blue and Gold for his first competitive run out for the Broncos. With Five points and the second win of the season in sight the game kicked off.

It was a quick start for Lewis Bunton off the boot giving us an early lead inside the first two minutes. However, soon after Sutton hit back with three points of their own. Momentum was with the home side with Sutton taking the first score under the post, one score shortly became two with the midfield defence opening up after great work from opposition fly half. The ref signalled the very much welcomed first water break of the game.

The boys in blue and gold came back out with a huge statement to make on the recently relegated Sutton and Epsom. Rimarni Richards does just this leaving not one, not two but three Sutton defenders flat on their backs after feeling the whole force of the big tight head. The boys are back in the game!

Sutton respond with a quick score with the heat looking like a big hurdle for the boys to overcome, but in the great word of former first team skipper Liam markey “let’s get the first blow out so we can get that second wind” and some second wind it was in a try LJ would be proud of, starting with a back ball from markey and finished off from the man himself, Liam Markey over the line! Momentum with the Broncos after great free flowing rugby with offloads putting the Flying Fijians to shame find us back in the corner ten metres out with a great chance to get another score on the board.

Great shift drive from the boys taking out five Sutton defenders, that man Rimarni Richards again at the back of the maul has a look up into what he deems as space - five black and white shirts, he says thank you very much taking them all on a fun ride over the whitewash for his second of the day!

Huge shoutout to Dan Hamilton bossing in the midfield making huge shots around the park, he spots an extremely vulnerable scrum half at the bottom of a ruck and he takes no prisoner that man, sits him down and putting Lewis Bunton into the corner giving Beckenham the first lead of the game! 25-24

The game was far from over in the relentless heat, but the game did start for debutant Stefan Linton finishing off an amazing move from the boys.

The second half saw ill disciple from both teams conceding far too many penalties which proved costly with the Sutton goal kicker keeping the home side in the game with points ticking over. Another pen this time five metres out which sees our skipper take a ten minute break in the bin. Sutton take full advantage of the man down with another score pick and go. 41-35 to the home side with just under ten minutes of the clock it is all or nothing.

Great restart for Bunton, he forces a terrible exit from Sutton, lineout beckenham -great drive from the boys winning the penalty advantage back into the corner we go again all or nothing. Another drive from the boys, going edging forwards slowly to the corner it keeps going … I think we are over watching from the sideline with a frozen towel on my head (courtesy of our manager Ali who had the ice cold flannels covered pitchside, just like the England medics), it all goes silent…not many celebrations from the boys, it feels like that was the final big moment in the game. The ref blows the whistle and takes that remarkable run underneath the post with one hand in the air… PENALTY TRY!!!!!

Just keep the ball is the message with literally nothing left on the clock, only the referees time. Another minute goes by still no whistle. Still no sign of full time… Penalty holding on to Sutton in the last death of the game 30m out in the home sides hot spot the place kicker, Suttons captain Freddie Bunting had slotted two during the game from the same blade of grass - 42-41 one kick to win the game. Heads in hands all over the stands Dan Browns heart rate through the roof.

Kick goes wide!

Frozen towels are flying!
