It’s an exciting season ahead for Beckenham Girls rugby

After some steady growth in recent years including a partnership with Old Alleynians last season, we’re proud to have developed our squad to be able to field standalone Beckenham Girls teams into the Kent U18 and new U15 Leagues this year.

This Sunday 22 September sees both the U18s and U15s in their first home games of the season to Dartfordians. Kick off for both games will be 13.45 – if you’re coming to the Club for England v Tonga in the Men’s World Cup, then why not stay after the game to support Beckenham Girls and maybe some future stars of the Red Roses?

An impressive win for Beckenham U15 Girls

In their first match of the season last weekend (15 September), Beckenham U15 Girls completed an impressive performance away at Old Colfeians side, with a convincing 41-20 victory over an athletic Colfes side. As the unseasonably hot September weather beat down, all the Beckenham girls stepped up, working hard in both attack and defence, with powerful running, strong tackles, and great support play from both forwards and backs.

In the forward pack, Katherine, Viv and Ruby made their U15 debuts, getting to grips swiftly with the demands of the new age group, and demonstrating some textbook lineout technique. Holly and Sasha both played on the front foot, leading the defensive push and carrying the ball strongly.

The back line welcomed Abby to her new position and leadership role as fly half with great results, as well as introducing Mia on her Beckenham Girls debut, running powerfully in the centre field. Wingers Funto and Phoebe were all over the park, with Funto running in two great tries and Phoebe showing her versatility by jumping in the lineout.

So much fantastic play for the girls to build on, and gratefully supported by a number of girls joining from Old Alleynians – Gabby, Merveille, Bo, Georgia and Jade – ensuring we had a good competitive match.

A promising start for Beckenham U18 Girls

Beckenham U18 Girls faced a tougher day at the office away to Old Colfeians U18s. The U18 age group is a broad one, covering three school years, and Colfes presented a strong challenge after several seasons growing their squad. With nine out of 12 Beckenham girls making their U18 debuts, on a blisteringly hot day, the game started with some trepidation but a good team spirit.

Playing ten-a-side on a full size pitch is a challenge for any age group, and holes in the defensive line were readily exploited by some rapid Colfes runners, who took an early lead and ran in several tries during a shortened first half. Beckenham never gave up and put in a heroic effort, with some brilliant chases and try-saving tackles showing their determination to protect their line.

The second half saw Beckenham develop some structure, sucking in the Colfes pack before stretching the backline wide and seeing Erin run in a great try under the posts, ably converted by Charlie. Sadly this wasn’t enough to redress the deficit, with the final scoreline 50-7 to Colfes.

The forward pack held their own in the set piece, with front rowers Charlie, Em, JEmma and Greta performing well in the scrum, and loose forwards Ella and Lucy H fierce in defence, with strong captainship from Lucy. The new halfback pairing of Kim and Lucy T showed real promise, supported by Madi, Erin and Lucy “Steve” V in the backline, and welcoming Rebecca for her rugby debut. Not the win we wanted, but a great team spirit and attitude, and a very proud coach!
