t is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our President David Plews. Put simply he was larger than life, a force for good and his dedication, humour and spirit will be remembered by Beckenham Rugby Club, the O2E charity, and all who knew him.
Throughout his life, David was a keen sportsman and social advocate. David took his teacher training, rugby and cycling into youth coaching and refereeing. He nurtured generations of young players, championing safeguarding and loved the opportunities when he got to play with his sons or fellow vets. He was particularly committed to the academy and his touch judging. So, it was no surprise that Kent RFU honoured him with the Spirit of Rugby Award, nor that he was appointed as Club President this year.
David’s commitment to the O2E charity was equally inspiring. He pushed himself in endurance challenges—cycling, running, and triathlon events—raising funds to support terminally ill children. His efforts were a testament to his beliefs.
Outside of his community commitments, David was devoted to his family. Loving husband to Melissa, cherished father to Martyn, Matthew, Anna, Coby and Kapene and loving grandfather. He always spoke with pride about his family, celebrating their achievements and giving them his unwavering support.
David’s loss will be felt deeply across both the rugby and charitable communities. His legacy of service, kindness, and perseverance will continue to inspire us all. Our love and thoughts go to his family at this difficult time.
