Beckenham produced a devastating opening blitz to take control of the game and establish a lead that they would never relinquish as they secured a bonus point victory away to Cobham last Saturday.

Playing with the slope and the slight breeze in the opening half, the advantage of the elements had little to do with the opening attacks as slick handling and intelligent lines of running gave the gave the visitors a two try lead before the home side had a chance to get out of the blocks.

Barely two minutes into the game, quick hands from first phase ball gave Joe Chivers the chance to release Laurence Headlam and he stepped inside the full back and ran in unopposed to give Chivers the easiest of conversions. Three minutes later Beckenham repeated the exercise as Headlam scored again to open up a fourteen point lead.

Cobham reacted well and some ten minutes later reduced the gap with a converted try of their own as Tom Hart broke through to score under the posts.

The pace of the game slowed down somewhat after the frantic opening quarter but Beckenham pressurised Cobham as they tried to break out of their own half and they disrupted possession and as Paul Currie followed through the referee awarded a penalty try for obstruction. Chivers slotted over the conversion to establish a 21 to 7 lead.

Cobham got themselves back into the game again when following a Doug Redman break and a period of intense pressure on the Beckenham line, Billy Davison score an unconverted try.

Luke flower added a penalty just before the break to leave the halftime score at 15 to 21.

With the elements in their favour the large vocal home support were eagerly anticipating the second half but they were soon to be quietened as the visitors struck again.

Barely five minutes into the half, Beckenham re-established a two score advantage when Charlie Baffour collected an intelligent Matt Leek cross-field kick to score under the posts, Chivers adding the extras.

A George Donoghue try for the hosts from a driving maul, converted by Flower reduced the deficit to six points. Minutes later Cobham looked certain to score but knocked on as the ball was being grounded.

Cobham abandoned their forwards orientated game plan and tried to run the ball only for Baffour to intercept near halfway and canter home to score under the posts to register his second try. Chivers converted to open up a thirteen point advantage and with time running out establishing an unassailable lead.

A late Cobham unconverted try earned the home side a bonus point but it was all too late as the final whistle went to confirm a Beckenham victory by 35 to 27.
