Beckenham end season in style

High Flying Chichester put to the sword

Beckenham rounded off the 2011-12 season in some style when they defeated high flying Chichester by 37 to 0 with a six try bonus point victory that ensured they finished in the top half of the table.

Playing uphill and into the breeze in the first half the home side limited their very useful opponents to few scoring chances and despite losing fly-half Jack Forrest to a shoulder injury they dominated the half for long periods and should have registered a couple of tries was it not for poor execution of the final pass.

Instead they had to settle for a Liam Caddy penalty to secure a 3 to 0 lead at the interval.

Few among the large crowd of spectators could have expected what happened after the break.

Firstly Liam Markey spotted a hole behind the defence and chipped through for Liam Caddy to collect and register an unconverted try.

Then the every busy BJ Tarbie rounded off a flowing backs move to score another five pointer and open up a thirteen point lead.

The visitors were noticeably taken aback by this and matters got even worse when they received a double yellow card for an infringement in the Beckenham Red-Zone.

The hosts took full advantage and with a plentiful supply of ball from a dominant Paul Roumph in the lineout and a rampant Lovejoy Chawatama in the loose, the scores quickly followed.

Paul Currie used his strength to break through the would-be tacklers to score another unconverted try after sixty five minutes.

The Pete Isaac got in on the act, linking superbly with his back-row to score two tries, firstly taking a scoring pass from Peter Thorne who had broken though the defence. Then he repeated the exercise with George Coogan to register Beckenham’s fifth try. Caddy converted both to put the score at 32 to 0 and effectively end the game as a contest.

Chichester tried to take the game to the home side in the last few minutes but they got little change out of a Beckenham team playing with a freedom not seen for some time.

The final say went to Alex Jones who claimed a ball in the air near the visitors 22 and ran through the cover to score a five pointer and leave the final score at 37 to 0.

Head Coach Dan Leek was delighted with the performance and was particularly pleased with the style of rugby the team played and keeping a quality side like Chichester scoreless.
