Home victory for 3's

Beckenham 3's 36 - Sidcup 3's 10

After the standard ringing around for players 20 minutes before kick off we finally took to the field with 14 men! Connor finally arrived about ten minutes into the game with the scores still at 0-0.

The pack looked strong on paper and it proved to be the case on the pitch. We had a good blend of experience and youth in the front row, with Andrew at loose head (making a good debut for the club), Jordan hooking and Batesy at tight. That coupled with the power of the Smith Brothers in the Row meant that scrum was solid throughout. That enabled Burroughs, Spurrier and Burt to get about the pitch and disrupt ball. The backs were also playing some nice rugby and the handling, considering the wet weather was very good. The forwards were providing Rob with some decent ball and Tame at fly half was orchestrating things well.

A great flowing move resulted in our first try with Oath having the final say and going over the whitewash. Sidcup bounced back with a penalty, but any hope they had of getting back in the game was quickly snuffed out when Adam Graham touched down in the corner. The try came though another spell of controlled and sustained pressure, which was very pleasing to see. The backs were running straight and hard in particular O Jones, Basil and Maloney who all had good games both in attack and defence. With the score at 12-3 at half time, we knew that the first try of the second half had to be ours.

This proved to be the case; some great scrapping from Burroughs, Spurrier, Smudge and Jordan resulted in a turnover close to the Sidcup 22. Some quick thinking put us straight on the attack and it was Oath again who was in the right place at the time to get his second try of the game. The try was a real hammer blow to Sidcup who heads clearly dropped; Beckenham sensed this and were to take full advantage. Further tries from Spurrier, Burt and one other that I can’t remember now (apologies) put the game to bed. Sidcup did get a late consolation try, but that’s all it was, this game was done and dusted.

A fantastic effort from all of the lads, every player giving their all resulting in a great performance and result – a win by 36 to 10
