The sun was trying to peek out from behind the clouds on this lovely day at Beckenham rugby club. With a brilliant line up, the ladies were bursting with energy and ready to get out on the pitch.
Romford ladies kicked off and Beckenham were ready to receive. After a few hard hits and some excellent scrums, the ball was taken over the try line by captain Helen Harris who put the first points on the board for this match. We held our ground, and ran some wonderful lines winning a great deal of the turnovers. Some amazing lines were run by full back Esther Brett and a brilliant fast run by Kirsty Long. However, Romford also came back fighting, putting their first points on the board in 32 mins. This pushed the Beckenham ladies on and seconds away from the half time whistle blowing, Helen Harris steamed through the Romford defence line to score the second try for the game.
After half time, the ladies continued the game headstrong and hitting the defence lines hard with Beth Pickernell performing some amazing tackles. The forwards were unrelenting with their lines, especially Sophia McGauley-Cave who won some ground with some quick feet and a brilliant handoff. Unfortunately, in the 65th minute, time went off with a head injury on both sides, as an accidental head collision needed to be attended to. As time went back on our ladies fought hard to keep the score in our favour, in spite of this, Romford broke through out defensive line in the 72nd minute to score their final try which was converted. With only 8 minutes on the clock left the ladies played their socks, off spending the majority of that time in the opposition 22.
Every player on that pitch played valiantly, with amazing team spirit and strong determination. The score did not reflect the effort and skills that was performed throughout this match.
Forward of the match: Sophia McGauley-Cave
Back of the match: Esther Brett and Beth Pickernell.
