WKD girls show quality at U13 Girls tournament
Grasshoppers U13 Festival, Tournament winners 21/04/2103
The WKD under 13 girls returned to Grasshopper Festival again this year with a strong squad of 11 girls, including 1 debutant. During the Tournament the West Kent Divas, rotated their squad, during the matches and ran out comfortable winners.
At group stages they beat a Barbarians mixed team 14 tries to zero, the highlight being a score by Erin Rochester who ran a perfect support line to receive Megan Browns offload following an excellent tackle which took her to ground while she was running at full speed.
Ellingham and Ringwood match started slowly and was a close encounter initially, but once the girls had warmed up and started to move the ball, normal service was resumed. A superb chase back by Bobbie Haywood exemplified the commitment of the teams defence, as others also got back to prevent the score.
Grasshoppers in previous games had demonstrated an ability to run fast and challenge at the tackle area, but again they were over powered easily by the speed and ability of the team. From set scrums, Ceri Edwards dictated play, setting the attacks down either flank where interplay often resulted in a try.
The Semi final was against Pulborough and again the girls overall play was controlled and effective. Direct running and off loading in the tackle kept the tempo high and when required the ball was moved quickly wide, to convert pressure into points and again a deserved clear win.
The final was against Exeter Saracens. A clear message was provided from the start as Ceri Edwards ran directly through to score. Exeter Saracens to there credit, fought back and scored themselves but there was always only going to be one winner. The pick of the trys scored was initiated by Ceri who off loaded in the tackle to Erin. Erin swept the ball out to Fiona who again offloaded in the tackle to Bobbie. Bobbie running forward moved the ball quickly wide to Megan who sprinted round the cover deference to score. A stunning score, which will be posted on the web site soon.
During the tournament West Kent Divas scored 40 tries while conceding only 5. Most trys scored involved several phases of interplay for which the whole squad must take credit. The games were a pleasure to watch and drew many favourable comments from opposition coaches and referees.
