Second half comeback secures win against injury hit Worthing

Beckenham entertained Worthing in a friendly game at Balmoral Avenue and provided a thriller that entertained the spectators right to the final whistle.

The home side received the kick-off and went straight on the attack with skipper Sianne Duffy taking the ball deep into the Worthing half before being bundled into touch. Jess Fisk took the lineout for Beckenham and with Ella Levey in support they continued to take the ball forward and move it wide to winger Lucy Seager who found some space and made good ground before being stopped by some excellent defence.

It was now Worthing’s chance to dominate possession and it took some excellent tackling from Aimee Bush, Katie Skelly and Ella Clancey to keep the visitors at bay. The home side were dominating the scrums and despite some good runs from Emily Romerill and Leanne Cooper they were unable to use the possession to force a scoring opportunity as the Worthing defence was on top form.

Eventually Worthing took control of proceedings and scored two fine tries from quick turnover ball which they spread wide to outflank the hosts. Both scores were unconverted to give them a 10 point lead.

Beckenham raised their game from the kick off and Clancey kicked long and Hannah Andersen-Ryan and Seager chased well and Duffy and Alanah Dray were quick to win the ball and give Fisk and Skelly the chance to take it forward. Megan Moloney was quick to feed Clancey who made good ground before releasing the supporting Levey who scored in the corner.

Worthing were not to take this lying down and dominated the rest of the half and inevitably scored as some poor home tackling let in a long range try to leave the half time score at 5 to 15 in favour of Worthing.

Worthing continued their domination early in the second half and were camped on the Beckenham line but firstly a last gasp try saving tackle by Clancey and powerful scrummaging by the hosts front five prevented the score. This seemed to invigorate the home side and Andersen-Ryan, Seager and Cooper chased a long kick and pressurised the visitors and Fisk and Skelly were on hand to force a lineout in their opponents half. A series of fine forward drives got Beckenham close to the opposition line and at the second time of asking Moloney broke from the base of the scrum at offloaded beautifully from the tackle to feed Clancey who crashed over near the posts. Clancey added the conversion to take the score to 12 to 15 with twelve minutes to go.

Worthing went long from the kick-off long and Dray went on a powerful run to take the ball out of danger and Levey and Romerill worked hard to secure possession and give Moloney the chance to feed Bush who kicked long to relieve the pressure. The home side’s forwards were now on top and Duffy, Skelly and Fisk were leading the way as they made ground. Worthing were not letting them have it all their own way and a desperate last ditch tackle a score after excellent work by the tireless Levey. After another fine drive by the hosts Worthing suffered a couple of injuries and Beckenham pressed home their advantage as Duffy crashed over after a fine forwards drive to give Beckenham the lead with an unconverted try.

Beckenham took the kick-off and scored a fine team try as first the forwards took clean possession and gave Moloney the platform to feed Clancey who released Bush on a 40m sprint to the line and score under the posts. Bush added the conversion and the final whistle sounded to confirm the final score at Beckenham 24 – Worthing 15.
