The WKD U15 Girls show skill, determination and courage at Worthing festival and are rewarded with a well earned win.

We arrived at Worthing RFC in a sunny disposition matched by the weather. The class of the hosts showed from the outset with filter coffee and bacon rolls, the size of side plates being dispensed from the "master chef" sized kitchens.

The festival was split into two stages, pool matches followed by knock out rounds. Up for grabs were the Cup, the Plate and the Shield.
Our first match scheduled was against Ellingham and Ringwood who, unfortunately had dropped out of the competition, thus giving us a bye. This is a coaches dream start, a good result and no injuries.

The sun continued to shine and the ground continued to harden. With several pitches suffering from alopecia, the bare ground was going to take it's toll........

Next up was Aylesford Bulls, an experienced team with some old friends. Despite Aylesford being dominant in open play, fierce tackling and great rucking kept the Bulls at bay. Special mention to Cerys and Hannah for chasing and diving on anything that moved and Fiona for barking order to coordinate the defense. WKD were pinned down near their try line on several occasions, and each time the forwards secured quality ball for Erin. Accurate passing under pressure enabled Ceri to make superb clearance kicks that had Aimee, Alice and Aefa (the A-team) chasing half way down the pitch.Alice took a bash drawing blood, (Blood replacement Ella),but not to miss out, came back on in the second half. Aylesford continued to press their size advantage, and close to half time, a string of excellent passes set their winger off to score a try. This was not converted. A second try before ½ time was averted by Ellas determined defense, knocking the ball out of the players hand before she could score a try.
WKD started the second half well, curtailing the Aylesford props' run with relentless tackling. Solid scrummaging from Cerys, Georgia (Ealing), Hannah, Fiona and Ella enabled quick ball to go down the line, unfortunately, we were unable to capitalize on our procession. Once again Aylesford's older and more experienced girls took control with some slick running and deft passing, eventually scoring. The try was unconverted. But WKD did not give up, chased and harried to win back the ball and turn defense into attack passed down the line for Ami to clear the cover defense only to miss out on a try by the unclear pitch markings.
It was a close game and a great testament to the WKD girls skill, technique and courage against a well drilled and accomplished side. Final result 0-10
We would like to thank Sandra and Georgia on loan from the Ealing Emeralds for their valued contributions.

After seeing the U.13's grab another victory, the U.15's were fired up for their next match against Ealing Emeralds. Keira and Ophelia (apologies for any wrong spelling, I am a man) on loan from the Emeralds helped complete the team. WKD started well, and like French teams of old, grew in confidence with a little sun on their backs. The forwards technique showed at the set pieces, with Ealing's scrum going backwards on several occasions. Ealing stepped up a gear and started to put pressure on WKD. One foray into WKD's 22, saw Ella produce a try saving tackle that forced the knock on. Another solid scrum gave Erin the chance to deliver quick ball for Ceri to execute another monster pressure relieving kick. Alas, turnover ball at the ruck led to a breakaway try, that was duly converted, and similar play to concede a third. Final score we think 17-0
WKD had opportunities during the game, but often the final pass went astray but on another day it could have been so different,
The final result did not do justice to the commitment and intensity the girls played with. Many thanks to the Ealing girls, who graciously made up our team.

Meanwhile the sun continued to shine and the ground continued to harden.......

A welcome break for lunch enabled the girls and parents to get into the shade and rehydrate, the girls because of the heat and the fiercely contested rugby they played all morning, the parents because......

The next match was the Shield playoff against Basingstoke to determine places. Freddie made a guest appearance and kindly agreed to hook, Once again solid work by the forwards from the start, enabled WKD to have the lions share of the early possession. Quick ball, swift hands down the line and strong running from Aefa (Old Cats) led to the first WKD try in the corner. Ceri's unsuccessful conversion came close. The battle increased in intensity with the forwards continuously rucking and mauling. In one such melee, Erin took an elbow to the nose, the ensuing blood making her look like an extra from Kill Bill. Fortunately her good looks (gets those from Paul.) were not spoilt. The second half showed no signs of a let up, WKD took control and with a serious of adept off loads, line running and support, led to Ceri making a break from some distance out and despite being caught managed to cross the line and score, hurting herself in the process. Fiona took over kicking duties, but was unable to extend the lead any further. With several minutes to go Basingstoke upped the tempo but WKD held firm as long as the could, repelling wave after wave of attacks. But with only a minute to go, a momentary lapse of concentration saw Basingstoke score a deserved try under the posts before the final whistle went.. The final result 10-7 was a deserved victory. Congratulations to the whole team, you played with commitment, courage and skill throughout the whole day.

Special mentions must go to Ceri, Ella and Erin who played in both U.13's and U.15's matches, sometimes back to back. Also mention in dispatches are the forwards, Cerys, Fiona and Hannah who, rucked, mauled and scrummaged for every inch of ground with great ferocity. Last but by no means least, the A-team, who displayed great running, passing and were immense in defense. Please also note, this was Aefa's first time out on a rugby field.

Paul.
P.S
Rochfor/Medway and Sheppy (RaMS) appeared in the U.15's cup final. They very kindly asked Alice, Aefa, Aimee, Ceri, Cerys and Fiona to "guest for them due to their long list of injuries. Tries from each of the A-team, helped secure a victory over Ealing Emeralds.
