WKD 56 Hitchin zero

Sunday 23rd of February, see WKD moving several points clear at the top of the Herts league with just 2 fixture remaining. With ½ term coming to an end, WKD travelled with a reduced squad of just 14 players, some players in new positions and a new captain for the day. Despite the changes, it was business as usual with another great team performance.

The first half played against a stiff wind, allowed the hanging kick off to be chased down. Once possession was secured, it was retained during several phases, passing though every players hands, first right and then left, before the ball was passed to Ceri who ran the last 5m to score the opening try. There then followed several more trys, which incorporate some special moments such as the team passing the ball right along the line to Luana on the left wing, who looked to take on the her opposite number. Once tackled, she presented the ball with a perfect long lay, just before Hannah who had tracked the ball, clamped on. Cerys and Fiona who were provided support on both side, clamped on, and the ball was secured in less than a second. Erin arrived and immediately swung the ball to ceri, who took it moving and distributed right, to the awaiting back line. From the coaches perspective there were many pleasing things and as always one or two small things to work on at training over the next few weeks but the team deserve the following special praise.

Within the forwards Morgan’s powerful running was complemented by Cerys ever present shadowing as more often than not Cerys was first over the ball, enjoying the freedom the number 8 position offered. The other front row forwards of Hannah and Olivia, were also every present at the brake down but were also happy to join the back line, as were Ella and Leila which meant there was an ever present blue line across the field.

In the backs Erin distributed very well linking with Ceri, who controlled the back line and distributing well, looping every one to score her second try and showing considerable foot balling skills and speed to out pace the cover defence. At centre Alice and Fiona complemented each other well and linked effectively, either making good ground, or distributing to the wings and then also looking to loop or secure the ball.

Elli at full back entered the line often and effectively linking well and on occasions going for the gaps, always looking to add an additional attacking threat on WKD possessions. Elli had lots of kicking practice and every conversion attempt was very executed. If it had not been for the very strong wind, many more would have been converted.

On the wings, Luana and Megan enjoyed several opportunities to run at the defence. When the cover defence was there, they linked well and looked to retain possession either from the off load, or presenting well, for team mates to secure. In the second ½ Luana moved to centre and continued to link well.

In the 2nd ½ Freddie was brought on as hooker and was involved in many linking movements.

The defensive of WKD was not tested very often, but when it was, it stood firm, with the aforementioned blue line, offering no route forward. Some of the tackles should have been lower, so that will be one of the items for training in the coming weeks.

GOM or best player performance goes to Cerys for unselfish work securing the ball for other to run with.
