WKD win 7,s match in Kent tournament, while not conceding a try

WKD girls commence the sevens festival season with a series of winning performances, to secure first place and yet another trophy.

A squad of 12 girls were selected for the Kent 7s tournament attended by Aylsford, Medway, Ashford and Storbridge

A round robin event, would provide a series of game in which WKD looked to rotate their squad, to establish who would best adapt to the shorten game.

Despite only 1 training session, prior to the event, the good work done by the coaches with the 10 aside format allowed the girls to make the transition most effectively to the 7,s game.

In defence the girls were committed, yet controlled. On occasion where the line was broken, cover came across and the thin blue line re formed and ensure a clean sheet in all matches.

In attach, the girls looked to avoid contact and played as a team, with tries being evenly distributed amongst the squad. The squad sprit was optimised by the speed in which water bottles raced onto the field, after each score.

WKD won all games convincingly, but I don’t recall the try scorers or the final scores.

As is the case when watching WKD play there are always to many fantastic moments to mention. At the presentation 1/2 the team were nominated for player of the tournament and I wonder why all were not nominated. For the record, Morgan was chosen by the Match officials, but I would have struggled to nominate one and everyone should be extremely proud of their effort and all have raised the bar again on what is expected from them.

Worthy of special mention are
Megan, playing scum ½, outside ½ sweeper and wing, (not all at the same time) demonstrated her versatility, and joined the line often to great effect
Soffie, for press defence, solid tackling, great urgency and good hands linking well.
Akina, excellent support lines, especially linking with Morgan.
Bobbie. With so little rugby time, fitted right in. Playing all positions in the backs (not all at the same time), including winning ball at the line out.
Ella for great communication and commitment and handling, diving to the floor to take the pass and holding it.

Extra special mention though goes to Luana, who decided to travel to the festival to gain some u13 match time and Olivia who joined her to played for Thanet. Both girls played extremely well with Olive being named player of the team, performing 6 consecutive tackles and scoring over 12 tries , (not all at the same time). Luana also played very well and all the WKD squad and parents cheered as she performed a perfect tackle on the very large opposition player, felling her like a tree
