International Women's Day

Celebrating the success of women and girls in Beckenham, and working to #BreakTheBias

Today (Tuesday 8 March) is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the achievements of women and amplifying the call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

This year’s IWD theme is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough, action is needed to level the playing field.

Rugby as a sport has made tremendous strides towards equality. But we are not there yet and there is still more to do. Recent research led by Harlequins and the Monash University looked at discrimination faced by women in rugby, with over half (59%) of people surveyed reporting that they had heard sexist slurs and negative jokes about women at their club in the last year, and more than one third (37%) having heard homophobic slurs. You can read more about the findings here.

Beckenham RFC is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. On International Women’s Day last year, we published our updated Equality Policy. We also celebrate the successes of women and girls across the club, as players, coaches, match officials and volunteers.

Beckenham Ladies 1st XV, led by head coach Bree Hill and captain Izzie West, are currently sitting top of the league in Championship 2 South East, pushing for a strong finish to the season to claim the top spot. We have also relaunched the Ladies 2nd XV, playing competitive rugby and ready to join the league system next season, giving even more players the opportunity to enjoy rugby.

Beckenham Girls section, led by head coach Laura Thompson, has grown from a handful of players a few years ago to one of the most successful and thriving girls’ rugby squads in Kent, with over 60 players across the U13, U15 and U18 age groups. The U13 girls finished second in the Kent waterfall tournament, the U15 girls topped their development competition and are now entering the Kent Cup, and the U18 Girls have finished third in the Kent league with five players selected for county honours.

This International Women’s Day, join us in celebrating the success of our women and girls. Thank you for all your support over the season. If you would like to know more, get involved, or know someone who wants to play rugby with us, then get in touch.
